How do CRC Responder slots work?

No More Room in Hell 2 characters are Civil Recovery Corps Responders — people who volunteered into CRC posts during the NPV health crisis and stayed on after the dead started walking. Official 1.0 copy: you manage up to three Responders at camp. Each slot is a save file, not a costume. Welcome notes.

  • Do01Create in camp, not on the drop ship — read the starter skill before you confirm
  • Do02Re-roll candidates until the profession matches the fight you actually play
  • Do03Keep slot 1 cheap until one extract lands — that is the beginner guide first-drop rule
  • Do04Use slot 2 / 3 for a second starter skill (stamina vs medical vs rifle), not three identical Hellfire clones
  • Do05Do not park an Expert loadout on a slot you still treat as disposable

Three slots is a roster, not a respawn pool

If slot 1 dies on extract fail or full mission fail, that Responder is gone. Slot 2 is a different person with a different name and a different starter skill. You do not inherit the dead slot’s Expert upgrades. Official copy: permadeath is always a threat at extraction or complete mission fail; higher difficulties make every death final. Solo strips permadeath so you can drill maps — it also strips regular XP, so it cannot replace a real extract.

Random names, then you decide whether to keep them

Create flow shows random candidates. Names are flavor. The profession line is the mechanic. If the name is ugly and the starter skill is Marathon Runner, keep the skill. If you hate the background, re-roll before the first drop — you cannot swap a profession later without making a new Responder. Once the slot exists, the remaining job is keeping it alive long enough for skills to matter.

What is the strongest character?

There is no strongest character in No More Room in Hell 2 because Responders are not classes. The strongest slot is the one whose starter skill matches the lane you will actually fight, then survives long enough to Expert-upgrade. A dead Hellfire rifleman is weaker than a living Nurse.

If you playLook for a starter that…Why it “wins”
Quiet melee, long walksBoosts stamina (often listed: Marathon Runner, Athlete)Stamina is the grab-break resource; empty bar is a bite
Squad medic / pills passerHelps heals / infection (often listed: Skilled Medic)Keeps expensive slots on their feet
Rifle when the lane is already loudHelps rifle uptime (often listed: Hellfire)Pays once you have committed to guns
Ammo drought on NightmareHelps loot / ammo (often listed: Scavenger)Scarcity is the 1.0 tax
Barricades, traps, speaker holdsHelps utility / barricades (often listed: Builder)Survival maps reward utility more than a fourth rifle perk
Dismember and melee finishersHelps dismember (often listed: Butcher)Quiet clears stay quiet when limbs come off
Dark interiors, long flashlightHelps flashlight time (often listed: Longer Battery)You cannot shoot what you cannot see

Strongest on Beginner is “still in the roster”

A first-drop Responder from the beginner guide should roll a survivability starter — stamina or medical — not the flashiest rifle line. You will loot guns on the map. You will not loot a second Marathon Runner if this slot converts in the hallway. Nightmare “strongest” is the same idea with a Rescue Beacon on the loadout and skills already Expert’d. Glass-cannon Hellfire without Beacon is a Credits sink, not a build.

Do not rank backgrounds like MMO classes

Army Reservist does not lock you out of medical skills later. Nurse does not forbid a rifle. The profession only seeds the first perk. Spend Credits to grow that perk and to unlock more. If a community tier list calls one background S-tier, read the starter skill, not the job title. The next question is what happens when that “S-tier” slot is the one you lost.

What happens if I lost a character?

A lost character search means permadeath deleted that Responder: name, levels, starter skill progress, Expert upgrades, and the field loadout on that slot. The other two slots are untouched. Rescue Beacon can block one of those losses if it was equipped. Early extract exists so you never have to test that sentence.

EventSlot statusWhat you do
Successful extract (early or final)Kept — infection does not carry if you boarded aliveSpend Credits; do not immediately queue Nightmare
Extract fail / full mission failDeleted (permadeath on)Roll a new candidate into the empty row
Down on Beginner, timer still runningUsually returns that minute — still at risk on extract failDo not treat the timer as a lost-character undo
Death while infectedCan convert into a hostile zombie, then the slot can goCall veins, peel or early extract — infection
Rescue Beacon equipped, loss event hitsSlot kept; Beacon consumedRe-buy before the next Hard/Nightmare drop
Solo deathSlot kept — Solo has no permadeathPractice only; no regular XP to “make up” a live wipe

Lost is a process error, not a lore beat

Most deleted Responders were still in a POI after pills ran out, or they boarded collapsing, or they took an expensive gun into Nightmare with no Beacon. Official 1.0 framing: early extract keeps the character and pays little; final extract pays Character XP plus Credits from team Supplies. On a collapsing clock, a living empty slot beats a full Supply bag. That abort is the extract page. This page’s job is naming what you actually lose when you skip it.

You cannot recover the same person

Re-rolling a new Army Reservist is not the same Responder. Credits spent on Expert Hellfire do not transfer. Cosmetics you bought for that body stay in the account locker; the skill tree on the corpse does not. If you are staring at an empty row, fill it with a cheap starter and run Beginner Objective until one extract lands. Do not “make the loss back” on Hard in the next queue.

If the loss was infection, read the symptom list next time before the cough. If it was greed, open early extract sooner. The background table below is how you pick the replacement without repeating the same glass cannon.

Which background should I roll?

Backgrounds are pre-outbreak professions. They set a starter skill. They are not fixed classes. The table is a community / wiki cheat-sheet, not an official CRC census — pairings drift between patches. Re-roll in camp until the create screen shows the skill you will actually play.

Roll the skill, then grow it on the skills page

Treat Hellfire, Skilled Medic, Marathon Runner, Scavenger, Builder, Butcher, and Longer Battery as names you may see — not a locked class kit. Credits buy Expert upgrades and later perks. 1.0 added reload skills and removed older names — the live list lives on skills. Do not invent a class identity around “I am the Nurse” if you picked up a rifle and an Expert reload. The profession is the first sentence, not the build.

Fill three different seeds, not three trophies

A useful roster is one stamina or medical slot, one gun-economy slot (Hellfire / Scavenger / shotgun), and one utility slot (Builder / Engineer / Butcher). That covers Objective noise, Survival speakers, and the dark Hospital interior without needing a fourth row. If all three are Army Reservist, one lost character wipes your only plan. Diversity is insurance. How that insurance looks in the mirror is cosmetics — next section.

How do I customise a Responder?

1.0 lets you customise outfit, compass, flashlight, and voices. Wright is the new voice pack in the Armageddon notes. None of these change the starter skill. They also do not come back a lost character. Armageddon 1.0 notes.

SlotWhat it doesSpend when
OutfitBody appearance on the ResponderAfter one extract — not before Tutorial
CompassHUD / navigation cosmetic typeWhen you can still read the map without it
FlashlightLight appearance — Engineer’s Longer Battery is the actual runtime perkDo not confuse a skin with battery life
Voices (Wright)Callouts and barks on proximity voiceFor squad ID, not a stealth buff
Merits cosmetics1.0 currency from Assignments — also buys BeaconBeacon first on a leveled slot, then skins

Wright does not make you quieter

Voices are how teammates pick you out of eight overlapping proximity calls. Pick one and keep it so the squad learns your bark. Wright is a 1.0 option, not a hidden perk. Outfit and flashlight skins do not reduce Runner aggro. If you need more light time, roll Engineer or buy the battery skill — do not buy a brighter-looking cosmetic and call it a build.

Locker versus slot

Account cosmetics can sit in the locker after a permadeath. The Expert tree cannot. Spend Merits on Rescue Beacon for the slot you care about before you spend them on a second flashlight skin. Customisation is how you tell three Responders apart at camp. Survival is how they stay there. Beacon is the last insurance layer.

Does Rescue Beacon save a lost character?

Rescue Beacon blocks the next character-loss event. It costs Credits or Merits, occupies one loadout slot, and is consumed when it fires. It can save a lost character once. It does not replace early extract, and it does not stop an infected body from becoming a problem for the people still fighting. Armageddon 1.0 notes.

When not to equipTutorial, Solo (no permadeath), or a fresh slot you still treat as disposable

Beacon is insurance. Extract is the play.

If Gene Therapy is gone, pills are empty, and the slot is expensive, open early extract. A Beacon in the bag is not a reason to finish the last CRC interact. If you die infected in the field, Beacon can keep the character; the corpse can still turn. Call it. Peel. The infection clock still runs.

Empty Beacon after a save is the next shopping trip

When Beacon fires, the slot lives and the item is gone. Re-buy before you queue the same difficulty again. Leaving a leveled Responder on Nightmare with an empty Beacon row is how a lost character happens the second time. Put the new Beacon on before the outfit. The mistakes list below is the short version of that habit.

Which Responder mistakes delete a slot?

Scan this before you queue. Most lost character rows are process errors: treating backgrounds as classes, skipping extract, or wearing cosmetics instead of Beacon.

MistakeFix
Queuing Nightmare on a fresh random nameTutorial → Solo drill → Beginner Objective — beginner guide
Keeping a background you will not playRe-roll in camp until the starter skill matches
Three identical Hellfire clonesSeed stamina / medical, guns, and utility across the three slots
Expensive loadout, no BeaconCheap kit until one extract; Beacon before Hard/Nightmare
Finishing CRC while collapsingEarly extract — extract
Silent infection on an Expert slotPills, call, kit or abort — infection
Treating Beacon as a playstyleInsurance for one loss; still abort on veins
Spending Merits on Wright before BeaconVoice pack after the slot is insured
Solo “to farm the loss back”Solo has no regular XP and no permadeath — practice only
Assuming slot 2 resurrects slot 1Empty row stays empty; roll a new Responder

One habit that keeps the roster

Before every drop, read the starter skill, the Beacon row, and the extract abort rule out loud. That is the whole No More Room in Hell 2 characters loop. The beginner guide is first-drop order; skills is where Credits go after you live; extract is how a lost character never happens.

No More Room in Hell 2 characters FAQ

What are No More Room in Hell 2 characters?

CRC Responders. You keep up to three slots. Each has a random name, a background, and a starter skill. They are not fixed classes. Permadeath can delete that slot. Rescue Beacon blocks one loss.

How many Responders can I keep?

Up to three active slots at camp. Losing one does not touch the other two. Filling a new row does not restore the deleted Expert tree.

What is the strongest character in No More Room in Hell 2?

None as a class. Roll a starter skill that matches your lane — stamina or medical names for first extracts, rifle or loot names once guns matter — then keep the slot alive. Confirm the name on the create screen.

What happens if I lost a character?

Permadeath deleted that Responder’s levels, skills, and loadout. Roll a new candidate. Rescue Beacon would have blocked one such event if it was equipped. Early extract exists so you never test that.

Are backgrounds the same as classes?

No. A background only sets a starter skill. Community sheets pair job titles with perks — those rows are examples, not an official census. Confirm the skill on the create screen. See skills.

What is Rescue Beacon?

A high-end loadout consumable bought with Credits or Merits. It occupies one loadout slot and blocks the next character-loss. It does not cleanse infection or replace early extract.

Can I customise Responders?

Yes. 1.0 adds outfit, compass, and flashlight appearance types, plus voices such as Wright. Cosmetics do not change starter skills and do not undo permadeath.

Do Responders have random names?

Yes. Create flow rolls random candidates with random names. Re-roll until the profession and starter skill are the ones you will actually play.

Does Solo Mode delete characters?

No. Solo has no permadeath and no regular progression rewards. Use it to drill maps, then run Beginner Objective for a real extract.
