How do Quick, Strong, and Charged melee attacks work?

No More Room in Hell 2 melee is three committed swings plus directional aim, not a click-spam minigame. Official 1.0 inspects show Quick, Strong, and Charged damage on each piece — exact values stay TBA here. Head hits, stability (stagger / knockdown), stamina cost, and swing speed are the dimensions Torn Banner actually prints. Armageddon notes.

Responder swinging a two-hand melee weapon in a dark interior
AttackWhat it is forStamina / riskDo not
QuickFast chips on Walkers when the bar is low or the doorway is tightCheapest swing; still not freeTrade Quick into a Prime face on empty stamina
StrongHeavier follow-up when you have a step of spaceMid tax; recovery is longerWide Strong in a doorway your teammate is holding
ChargedCommit damage on an isolated or already staggered head — especially PrimesHighest tax; long windupCharge inside a grab range or a three-wide hall
Directional swingLeft / right arcs; sharp arcs are how legs become CrawlersSame stamina as the attack you choseAssume a missed arc still “clears” the lane

Charged is a decision, not a habit

A Charged head on a lone Walker or a staggered Prime is why you kept the Fire Axe. A Charged windup while two Walkers close from the flank is how you get bitten and start the infection clock. If the target is still standing after the hit, shove, step, then Quick — do not immediately charge again.

Spam-clicking does not make Quick faster. The animation owns the swing. Learn the recoveries in Tutorial, then treat Solo as a stamina drill, not an XP farm.

Guns stay a noise budget

This melee guide exists because ammo is scarce and unsilenced fire pulls Walkers and Runners onto the squad. Shoot when a Runner will catch you, when a helmet / Prime will not stagger, or when the extract door is the threat. Calibers and attachments live on the weapons page.

Next: the two buttons that buy the swing — shove and kick.

How do I shove and kick without emptying stamina?

Stamina gates every swing, sprint, shove, and kick. Empty the bar and recovery, grab escapes, and even the next shove get worse — that is the bite window. Treat the bar as a defensive resource, not a damage meter.

Responder shoving a Walker to create space before swinging
ToolDefaultJobCost if you spam it
ShoveFCreate one step of space, interrupt a grab start, reset a missed swingShort tax — still stacks in a crowd
KickHeavier hold on the shove bind (confirm in Tutorial)Stronger stagger / multi-body bump when one shove is not enoughBigger tax than a tap shove
Sprint / vaultMovementRotate off a bad angleSteals the bar you needed for the next Charged
Quick stringTap attacksFinish a downed Walker during the +100% windowA long string leaves you empty for the next grab

The safe string is shove → swing → step, not swing → swing → collapse

Open on a closing Walker with a shove if the weapon is short (Small Knife, Cleaver, Mallet). That creates the window a light blade often fails to interrupt on its own. Then Quick or Strong the head. If the body drops, stay on it for the +100% window instead of turning into the next zombie with an empty bar.

Kick when one shove does not move the pile — a doorway, a stair, two Walkers overlapping. Do not kick as your only plan against a Runner; that is a gun or a charged head with space, not a panic F-hold.

Empty stamina is how infection starts

Low stamina makes grabs stick and escapes fail. A grab you cannot break is a bite; a bite is Phalanx Pills and a hunt for Gene Therapy. If the bar is red, back up, let it refill, and let a teammate take the next swing. Butcher-style dismember and stamina skills change how long you can live on Charged heads — confirm on your Responder, do not assume every background swings for free.

Once the string is reliable, you need names. Only sixteen melee pieces are confirmed.

Which melee weapons are confirmed in 1.0?

Armageddon notes name sixteen melee pieces. Quick / Strong / Charged numbers stay TBA until an official sheet lands — use grip, reach, and blunt-versus-sharp role. Do not invent a seventeenth name from Early Access memory (Claw Hammer, Crowbar, and Sledgehammer are not on this 1.0 list). 1.0 notes.

Reach beats fashion

A Small Pipe that you can Quick all day still loses to a Hockey Stick or Shovel that keeps Walkers off your chest. One-hand sharp (Machete, Hatchet) wins interiors because recovery is shorter. Two-hand blunt wins yards because the arc and knockdown buy the +100% window. If a world drop is not in this table, treat the label as unverified.

Guns, throwables, and the rest of the ~38-weapon recap stay on weapons. The next fork is blunt versus sharp — that is a Crawler decision, not a DPS meme.

When should I use blunt knockdown vs sharp dismember?

Official combat notes split the two profiles cleanly. Blunt is the knockdown path. Sharp is the dismember path. Downed infected take 100% extra damage until they stand. Legs you cut become Crawlers you still have to finish. Reanimation notes.

Blunt melee knocking a Walker down in a tight brick corridor
ProfileWhat it doesBest targetTrap
Blunt (pipe, bat, shovel, wrench, rebar)Stability / knockdown, then +100% on the groundWalker packs, yard lanes, anything you can drop and finishIgnoring the get-up — they stand in your recovery
Sharp (knife, cleaver, machete, hatchet, trimmer, fire axe)Directional cuts; legs → CrawlersDoorways, stairs, single Walkers you can isolateLeaving Crawlers behind the squad as trip hazards
Mixed hotbarOne blunt + one sharp if weight allowsSwap by room, not by moodTwo two-handers and no medical

Knock them down, then spend the +100%

A blunt Strong or Charged that puts a Walker on the floor is only half the kill. Stay on the body for the bonus window instead of turning to the next shout. That is how a Shovel or Baseball Bat earns its stamina cost. If a second infected is already in grab range, shove first — the downed one waits a beat; the standing one does not.

Crawlers are not loot

A clean leg cut feels like a win and then eats a teammate who is reloading. Finish Crawlers before you rotate. Small Knife and Cleaver need a shove opener because reach is tiny; Machete and Hatchet can open on the limb if you already have space. Tree Trimmer and Fire Axe do the same job at two-hand range — Charged heads on Primes, arcs on Walker legs when the lane is a hallway.

Prime, Runner, Shambler, and armored types (Firefighter, riot, construction) change which profile you even try. HP and armor notes: zombies.

What is a practical PvE melee weapons tier list?

There is no official S–D chart, and this page will not invent a PvP ranking. The No More Room in Hell 2 melee weapons tier list below is a PvE keep/drop rule for Objective and Survival versus Walkers, Runners, and Primes. Community Early Access lists that still name Claw Hammer or Crowbar are a different roster.

“Best melee” is a stamina question

If you want a one-line best melee answer for PvE: Fire Axe when you can pay the two-hand recovery, Hatchet or Machete when you cannot. Baseball Bat and Shovel are the blunt answers when you want knockdown more than limbs. That is an ammo-economy and grab-risk call, not a published ladder. Re-test after patches.

Shop melee, if listed, costs Credits and a loadout slot — buy the gap after Rescue Beacon and pills, not a trophy axe on a fresh Responder. Shop vs field: weapons.

Which melee mistakes get Responders bitten?

These habits waste stamina and other people's extracts. They are PvE failures — not PvP “bad matchup” talk.

  • Avoid01Charged windup in a three-wide hallway
  • Avoid02Emptying stamina, then discovering shove no longer saves you
  • Avoid03Leaving Crawlers in the reload lane
  • Avoid04Ignoring a downed Walker until it stands in your recovery
  • Avoid05Keeping Small Pipe after a Fire Axe or Bat is on the floor
  • Avoid06Firing an unsilenced rifle to “clear a path” melee would have walked
  • Avoid07Teaching the squad Claw Hammer / Crowbar as 1.0 names
  • Avoid08Copying a PvP or Early Access melee weapons tier list into Objective
  • Avoid09Standing in a doorway through a Baseball Bat recovery while a Runner closes
  • Avoid10Skipping Butcher / stamina skills while living on Charged heads

One habit that saves the roster

Before every loud action, ask whether a shove plus a Charged or Strong ends the threat. If yes, do not fire. If the bar is empty, do not swing. That pair of checks is the whole No More Room in Hell 2 melee guide loop.

Next: identify what you are swinging at on zombies, then rank the guns you should almost not use on weapons.

FAQ

What is the best melee in No More Room in Hell 2?

PvE only: Fire Axe when you can afford two-hand recovery; Hatchet or Machete when you need one-hand speed; Baseball Bat or Shovel when you want blunt knockdown. Exact Quick / Strong / Charged numbers are TBA. No PvP ranking.

How do I switch to melee?

Use the weapon wheel / hotbar. Do not fire a gun to “clear space” next to teammates. Shove is F; kick is the heavier hold on that bind — confirm in Tutorial.

What is the No More Room in Hell 2 melee weapons tier list?

PvE keep/drop: Fire Axe, Tree Trimmer, Baseball Bat, Hatchet on top; Shovel, Machete, Hockey Stick, Large Pipe in the middle; swap Small Pipe, Small Wrench, Mallet, and Small Knife ASAP. Community EA lists that still name Crowbar or Claw Hammer are a different roster.

Do downed zombies take extra damage?

Yes. Official notes: downed infected take 100% extra damage until they stand. Blunt is the knockdown path.

What happens if I cut off a zombie’s legs?

Sharp dismember can turn them into Crawlers. They are not dead. Finish them before you rotate.

How many melee weapons are confirmed?

Sixteen named pieces in the 1.0 notes: Mallet, Small Wrench, Small Pipe, Tire Iron, Small Knife, Cleaver, Machete, Hatchet, Rebar, Hockey Stick, Large Pipe, Large Wrench, Baseball Bat, Shovel, Tree Trimmer, Fire Axe.

Which page should I read next?

Open zombies for Prime / Runner HP, weapons for guns and attachments, and skills for Butcher and stamina perks.
